Press Release

Inequality and discrimination against women underlie many of the practices of Canada’s correctional services. CAEFS has clearly researched and presented an in depth analysis of this appalling situation. The CAEFS submission to the Canadian Human Rights Commission shows how little action there has been to address the disadvantage and social context of federally sentenced women.

Womenspace supports CAEFS call upon the Government of Canada and the Correctional Service of Canada to radically and immediately review and correct the widespread discrimination faced by federally sentenced women throughout the criminal justice system, and particularly the discrimination faced by aboriginal women and women with disabilities.

We also join CAEFS to call upon the Canadian Human Rights Commission to immediately begin the review process of Canada’s present violation of international obligations in the administration of institutional and community corrections

It’s time to stop penalizing women for social disadvantage and expect our society to right the wrongs of discrimination, and to institute substantive equality for all women.
